There are kids who try to be good, but he can tell they don’t follow the rules – telltale gum fragments caught in wires and tattling siblings build the case. It’s Halloween.”Īndrew Schwartz, a Rockville, Md., orthodontist, can usually predict which of his patients will land in his chair most often, but those predictions go out the window during Halloween, because everyone is tempted. Don’t eat anything hard or sticky,’ ” said Kathleen Tompros, an orthodontist assistant in Ellicott City, Md. “We always tell them, ‘Remember, guys, it’s Halloween. That’s why orthodontists remind everyone of the rules. “We warn the staff, but there’s nothing you can do to avoid it.”Īlthough a majority of the patients are children and teenagers, orthodontists say some of their adult patients also slip up occasionally. “Whatever your imagination can run with, it’s worse than that,” Frank said. That means scheduling several emergency appointments on an already full calendar. The extra workload can last six weeks, because it takes some patients a while to realize problems, said Harold Frank, a Virginia orthodontist.Īnd some problems are not so minor braces relinquish their straightening powers if any breakage is not corrected immediately. The emergency calls and extra appointments start to trickle in on the days leading up to Halloween, flare on the day after, steadily continue for a week and then taper off as the candy supply lessens. “It’s all hands on deck, no vacation time for anyone,” said Lee Graber, a trustee to the American Association of Orthodontists who practices in a Chicago suburb. All that hard, sticky, chewy candy and gum spilling out of sacks collected from the neighbors isn’t just bad for you it’s killer on braces. The week after Halloween, orthodontists’ offices can be flooded. Some orthodontists have called it Halloween Hell, Candy Craze and, this year, Black Thursday. Wires were twisted out of place, poking cheeks and irritating gums. Metal brackets glued to tooth enamel began to pop. So you can't just pop in with him for a quick fix of anything - you'll likely have to wait several days.WASHINGTON – Sometime late Halloween night, the after-hours calls began. And he splits his time with his other office in VA. They all seem on pins and needles whenever they have to interact with him. He seems cold and demeaning towards his employees though. The techs and front desk staff are friendly. He does have a convenient location if you work in downtown DC. I think he's competent enough but I don't have anything to compare him to so how do I know. It's been very unpleasant for me having to see him every 6 weeks. Sometimes he'll sit in his office even though all the chairs are occupied by waiting patients. He treats you like you're in an assembly line. He shows zero interest in building a rapport. He's dismissive of any concerns or questions. Once I signed on, almost immediately, I felt like his whole demeanor changed. Of course during the consultation they're trying to reel you in so they're on their best behavior. (Clearly, those are all paid reviews.) So you're really going in blind. Nearly all the DC orthodontists have glowing Yelp reviews so that's of no help. I researched him and didn't find any lawsuits. He's board certified (although I'm not sure what difference that makes when all is said and done). He came off very personable and easy going at the consultation. I've been to Andrew Schwartz on K Street, and it's been an irritating experience with him.
